I see you, wife of Job

When i was young and naive, reading the book of Job always reminded me how ungoldy and wrong the wife of Job was. I was thinking like i was the Mrs Right that will never act like Job.s wife. But growing up, i indeed reach the point where i could say what Neytiri said to Jake Sully, i see you.

She, who isn’t titled to any name, i think is a woman who is too often being misjudged and accused by so many generations. I bet (in my mind), She was willing to be that person, a person to be misjudged because she was ashamed with His love for her despite of that one word she said on Job 2:9 so people like me could learn to see through her in me and realize that we, human, woman, often judge people to quickly.

Job 2:9-10b NIV (His wife said to him : “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.”

I am surprised that from the entire book of Job, his wife only mentioned on this one verse, and that’s all. There’s no verse that mention her anymore within the book. So that we are too focus on Job’s pain and hurt, we feel bad for Job, we feel that he was probably the most pity man across generations.

We forgot that Job was not the only person that lost everything. His wife too.

Job lost his children, his wife too lost her dear children that she gave birth to.

Job lost his wealth, his wife too lost her sense of secure and probably forced to work.

Job lost his friends, i’m pretty sure his wife also lost many.

Job lost his health, i know that in this situation, her mental state and health was not better than his condition.

But as i keep reading to the end of the book of Job, i adore her. I adore how she chose to stay beside Job and therefore i know she also ashamed of what she said and chose to stay in God. How do i know this? Because when The Lord restored everything that Job’s lost, He restored his children – and not a wife. It didn’t said on the bible that God gave him a new wife or that Job married another one. It is only said :

Job 42:12-15 (The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. And He also had seven sons and three daughters. The first daughter he named Jemimah, the secnd Keziah and the third Karenhppuch.”

I am pretty sure that Job will not forget to write down “a new wife” if indeed The Lord sent him one as that will be another thing that God has blessed him with (he even mentioned the camels and donkeys).

So i assumed, that it is the same wife that said “curse God and die’ to him that chose to stay and take care of him (look at how they got busy after that and have 10 children lol).

As i said in the beginning, now that i grow up to be a wife and mother, i can say that these couple of years have been hard. We lost many things and a lot has happened that i can understand why Job’s wife said those words. I even couple of times felt angry and said something that i shouldn’t to the Lord. So, for Job’s wife to have said those words, it is wrong, but hey, can you imagine her burden? can you imagine how hard it was for her to lost everything in one day.

She hasn’t finished her grieve and even hasn’t started grieving for her first child before the second news came along and hit her. I am quite surprised that she didn’t just kill her self back then. And so i know, How great is our God. He still loved her despite her anger and disappointment, He blessed her with faith and peace so that she could survive and not kill her self. Because, i know, as i have been there, she won’t ever survive if it is not by His grace.

When one day, when it’s time for me to go to Heaven, i think i will surely meet her and have a chat with her. She was such a strong woman, she endured everything and survived. She stayed quite and let herself only being mentioned once in the Book. She even didn’t want to be mentioned in the “restoration phase”, that’s how i know how humble and strong she was. Because a woman’s strength lays in her peaceful mind. She didn’t care about what others think of her, she only cares about her growth and learning to be better in God, for his husband and family.

Another woman in the bible who i think has a similar situation but different ending is David’s wife in 2 samuel 6:21-23 :

20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”

21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”

23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

Reading this makes me realize that Job’s wife might said something “so ungodly”, but i could sense somehow, that she was aying those words with a broken heart, with sadness and tears pouring from her eyes as she thought she has just lost everything and lost God’s favors and mercy to her. After everything has been taken, she had to see her beloved husband got terribly sick, She lost her hope.

Job 42:16-17 NIV “After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; He saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so he died, old and full of years.”
